Ecolab Matching Grant Combats Hunger in the Twin CitiesEcolab Inc. recently pledged a challenge grant that could be worth up to $500,000 to fight hunger in the Twin Cities. The St. Paul-based company designated the Dorothy Day Center emergency food shelf as one of three recipients of the grant announced March 2. Maplewood food bank Second Harvest Heartland and Neighborhood House, located in St. Paul, will also receive funding from the grant.
“Estimates are that donations to local food shelves are down 30 percent, while visits have increased by 60 percent," said Douglas Baker Jr., chairman, president and CEO of Ecolab. “It is times like these that cause us to focus on what we can do to help by giving our time and resources.”
The grant is part of a corporate gift-matching program. Ecolab will match every $1 given by its employees and retirees up to $250,000, which could provide a total of up to $500,000. These donations will then be used to buy food for people and families turning to the food shelves to help make ends meet.
Area food shelves have been stretched thin in recent months, as the economy has continued to struggle. This grant will help the Dorothy Day food shelf better serve its clients, as demand for services continues to rise to near-record levels.
“We’re proud to partner with Ecolab in the fight to end hunger in the Twin Cities,” said Catholic Charities CEO Fr. John Estrem. “This grant will help us tremendously in that fight.”
