Housing First
Catholic Charities' Housing First Program helps long-term homeless men and women secure housing and connect to supportive services to help them remain housed. The Rapid Re-housing Program helps people experiencing short-term homelessness of less than one year find housing and provides limited follow-up services for six months.
Housing First is a national model that delivers services in a more dignified and compassionate way by providing people who are homeless with the stability of housing and then offering supportive services to address their barriers to stabilization.
Working through strategic partnerships with a consortium of local service providers in Hennepin and Ramsey counties, Catholic Charities provides the initial outreach and the services that follow once people are placed. Follow-up services include help in securing Social Security or veterans’ benefits, transportation to medical appointments, basic necessities such as food and furniture and referrals to community resources.
Services:
- Scattered-site housing in the Twin Cities for single men and women
- Follow-up support services to help individuals maintain their housing
- Tenant/landlord mediation
- Referrals to community resources
2008 Outcomes
- Ninety-four people experiencing long-term homelessness were housed, and 81 percent maintained their housing
- Sixty-three people experiencing short-term homelessness found housing, and 90 percent stayed housed for at least six months
- Fifty-nine families were placed in housing, with 72 percent remaining housed
