Year-round Learning at St. Joe's
As spring break approaches for many schools, St. Joseph’s Home for Children is looking ahead to summer — summer school, that is. St. Joe’s partners with Minneapolis Public Schools to hold an onsite year-round school.
This partnership allows St. Joe’s to provide academic education paired with specialized treatment for children with behavioral or emotional issues. During the summer, charitable contributions subsidize the cost of the school so children can continue making progress with their treatment. The benefits of students attending summer school are numerous.
“Summer school promotes increased structure, academic achievement, positive peer relationships and it helps support families,” said Linda Tunell, St. Joe’s Day Treatment program director.

Branch III Adds Services for Guests
To better serve the guests at Branch III, construction is currently underway to add eight washers and two showers in the lower level of the drop in and resource center. The renovation will double the number of showers and almost triple the number of laundry units available for the 300 clients that Branch III serves every day. The additions give clients better access to these basic needs and decrease the amount of time clients need to wait. Renovation should be completed by mid-September.

Best Buy Renovates Children’s Kitchen at St. Joseph’s Home for Children
Thanks to Best Buy and their vendor partners, youth at St. Joseph’s Home for Children will learn basic cooking skills in a newly renovated children’s kitchen. Catholic Charities recently recognized Best Buy for its generous employees who volunteered to complete the work, including painting and construction. The corporation also invoked the help of other businesses – including Bridgewood Custom Cabinetry, Cambria, Kitchen Tune-Up and Frigidaire*KitchenAid*LG – to donate kitchen appliances, cabinetry and counter tops. This partnership created an ideal space for St. Joe’s occupational therapists to use when working with the youth. In addition, The Best Buy Children’s Foundation awarded a $2,000 Tag Team Award to St. Joe’s in honor of the volunteer hours dedicated to this project.top of page
Grant Helps Children in North Minneapolis
Catholic Charities has partnered with the University of Minnesota’s Center for Early Education and Development and several other organizations to help increase the school-readiness of young children in North Minneapolis.
The partnership has received funding from NorthWay Community Trust to build a network of high-quality early childhood services that support children’s healthy development and learning. The daily curriculum at Catholic Charities’ Northside Child Development Center will serve as a model to help family, friend and neighbor daycares prepare children for success in school.

Women's Shelter Opens at the Dorothy Day Center
A women's shelter recently opened on the second floor of Catholic Charities' Dorothy Day Center. Thanks to funding from the City of St. Paul and Minnesota Housing, the new shelter gives 40 women a more dignified space. The women's shelter offers showers, restrooms and office space for staff. Construction of the women's shelter was completed in summer 2007.

"Fox 9 Gives Back" Raises Money for St. Joseph's Home for Children
A special thanks to all those who supported "Fox 9 Gives Back" which raised funds for Twin Cities children living in poverty. "Fox 9 Gives Back" raised more than $17,000 for the children at Catholic Charities' St. Joseph's Home for Children - a Minneapolis shelter and treatment center for youth in need. St. Joe's serves nearly 2,000 of Minnesota's impoverished youth each year, providing shelter from abuse and neglect, and providing therapy to help children gain lifelong skills.

Catholic Charities USA Launches Campaign to Reduce Poverty in America
Catholic Charities USA, based in Arlington, Virgina, launched its Campaign to Reduce Poverty in America by presenting the policy paper “Poverty in America: A Threat to the Common Good” at a U.S. Capitol Hill briefing on January 10, 2007. The campaign will focus on policies in four major areas: health care, affordable housing, nutrition assistance and family economic security for the poor and vulnerable.
